Invitation to the lecture entitled Distributional methods in the language sciences: Insights from diachronic morphology and syntax

Ľ. Štúr Institute of Linguistics SAS invites everyone to the academy lecture Distributional methods in the language sciences: Insights from diachronic morphology and syntax given by professor Dr. Stefan Hartmann from the Institute of German Studies, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf in Germany, that will be held on February 20, 2025 at 10.00 AM on the premises of the Small Congress Centre SAS (Štefánikova 3, Bratislava).

Corpus methods provide an ideal way of operationalization of Wittgenstein’s quote: “Meaning of a word is its use in the language”. Therefore, distributional methods measuring word and construction meanings in the context are getting more popular. Professor Dr. Stefan Hartmann will talk about the potential and limits of distributional methods used in diachronic morphology and syntax research by integrating findings of his two case studies.
