Ľudovít Štúr – native versus foreign words in a language… Language borrowings were not firmly rejected by Ľudovít Štúr, although he expressed strong criticisms of their excessive use.
On the occasion of the Year of Ľudovít Štúr we offer a poster with several terms explained through the Latin and German equivalents by Ľudovít Štúr. He himself also used borrowed words in his works, especially, those of Greek and Latin origin.
Jana Skladaná describes Ľudovít Štúr’s attitude towards borrowings in the study entitled Vzťah Ľudovíta Štúra k preberaniu cudzích slov v slovenčine. The study is available here.
To find out more about the borrowed words used in Slovak nowadays, please read the study Frekvencia lexikálnych jednotiek cudzieho pôvodu v slovenčine written by Radovan Garabík and Agáta Karčová. The study is available here.
Take a look at the poster and answer the question – „native or foreign?“.
