Zasurmili surmity, volajú do zbroje…
On the occasion of the Year of Ľudovít Štúr we offer you a poster containing verses on national and civil rights written by Štúr-era poets. It was not a gun battle, the poets fought with writings, particularly published in Slovenské národné noviny (The Slovak National Newspaper). The journal played a key role in national awareness raising, life development and establishment of a standardized Slovak language.
The study Zasurmili surmity, volajú do zbroje written by Adriana Ferenčíková is dedicated to the battle without guns. The article together with other interesting studies is available here.
In the Slovak portal you can find the examples of historical military vocabulary. What we recommend is to look up for the words such as balta, čakan, pika, jatagán/hatagán or handžár, budzogáň, mlat.
